About the Burgundy wine region
The name Burgundy (Bourgogne in French) comes from the Burundians, an ancient Germanic people originating in Bornholm who settled in the area during the early Middle Ages.
Burgundy’s best red and white wines set the gold standard for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. At the top of their game, Burgundy wines are acknowledged as some of the most aromatically complex, seductive and silky on the globe. This thanks in part to their indescribable melding of fruits, flowers, minerals, and earth, as well as their facility in projecting an authoritative flavor sans excess weight.
Unfortunately, for many, the best Burgundies are only produced in limited numbers. Burgundy wines can spell trouble for the non-connoisseur—there are still many examples of less than stellar, overpriced bottles for sale. This fact is due to the nature of the region’s vineyard ownership. An individual, small premier cru vineyard may be subdivided amongst a dozen or more owners. These owners may produce everything from plonk to exceptional wines—all at the same price—depending on the skills of the producer.
The Côte d'Or, or "golden slope," is the in heart of Burgundy and is home to the region’s most famous, and pricey, wines. This 30-mile-long ribbon of vineyards is where all the Grand Cru vineyards (except for Chablis Grand Cru) are found. The Côte d'Or lies just south of Dijon extending to Chagny. The greater Burgundy region also envelopes Chablis to the northern extreme, while the Côte Chalonnaise and Maconnais regions are located to the south of the Côte d'Or. Beaujolais, at the extreme southern end of the Burgundy region, almost touches the outreaches of Lyon.
Produced from vines aged 60 to 90 years, planted in marly soils at 375 metres on the east-facing site below the village. The wine has a seductive richness to it, with lush, ripe apricot aromas enlivened by hints of lemon...
Textural and gourmand, the 2019 Pouilly-Loché Clos des Rocs (Monopole) opens in the glass with scents of pear, clear honey, fresh bread, nutmeg and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, layered and satiny, its fleshy core...
(92-94 points) There are two plots, purchased in 2009, one in the upper part of the vineyard and one below, next to de Montille. Interestingly this is clearly finer in style than the Grands Epenots, fresher, with better...
(91-94 points) There is an interesting, if very subtle, minty character to the ripe, expressive and attractively layered nose of both white and yellow peach, nectarine and iodine along with a plethora of floral elements...
Toasted almond and toffee notes mingle into ripe lemon and pear in this silky, cream-textured white. Judiciously oaked and luscious yet bright-eyed in fruit character, it's a smart village-level Chassagne-Montrachet with...
The 2019 Chablis Vieilles Vignes "Sélection Massale" comes from vines over 50 years of age in the lieu-dit of Les Pargues. This has a striking, almost pungent bouquet featuring vivid scents of green apples, gooseberry and...
A very serious wine for Mercurey, although the nose of forest berries with a rooty touch is only just beginning to open up. Tightly focused, medium-bodied palate with excellent tannin structure and a very long, fresh...
Readers will remember that I admired the 2019 Fleurie last year, and that hasn't changed on reacquaintance. Bursting with scents of raspberries, orange rind, rose petals, spices and potpourri, it's medium to full-bodied...
The 2019 Clos de Tart Grand Cru has turned out brilliantly. Mingling notes of wild berries and cherries with hints of peonies, rose petal, orange rind, exotic spices and musk, it's full-bodied, layered and...
(92-94 points) The 2019 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly has also turned out nicely, displaying aromas of pear, fresh bread, confit lemon and nutmeg, framed by a promising—at this stage in its élevage—touch of reduction...
(90-93 points) Touches of resin and rosemary oil add breadth to the nicely spicy aromas of white flowers, pear and apple. There is very good energy to the caressing, suave and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors...
(92+ points) The 2019 Saint-Romain Sous le Château is also excellent, offering up aromas of citrus oil and crisp Anjou pear mingled with hints of fresh hazelnut and almond. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and...
(90-92 points) The mildly exotic aromas of yellow orchard fruit, petrol and quinine give way to dense and sappy flavors that also possess fine volume on the powerful, saline and bone-dry finale. This is coming along very...
From a 0.45ha parcel at the top of the slope in white marl and limestone soils, this is a bit reserved on the nose, but with time begins to open, coating the palate with a very fine layer of lemony fruit of remarkable...
(90-92 points) The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Champ Gain 1er Cru, matured in 25-30% new oak, has an impressive, well-defined mineral-driven bouquet that shows off the quality of this appellation. The palate is saline on the...
(91-94 points) Lively green reflections in the lemon yellow. Quite a powerful bouquet and showing the oak a bit at the moment: it has not yet been racked out of its 300 litre barrels. Very fleshy as well, leading to a...
A smoky and restrained nose grudgingly reveals its notes of dark currant, red cherry, earth, game and a hint of underbrush. The supple yet intense medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality on the sleekly muscular...
(91-93 points) A ripe yet quite classic nose features notes of mineral reduction, citrus confit, white flower and a suggestion of quinine. The succulent and exceptionally rich medium-bodied flavors possess a seductive...
(91-93 points) Pale lemon and lime. A more restrained nose, far from the madding crowd of 2019, this Meursault-Blagny has kept its freshness. It offers greater tensile strength than the village Meursault, but not...
(92-94 points) A subtle but still noticeable application of wood surrounds the elegant mix of white peach, apricot, sea breeze, floral and shellfish scented nose where a hint of phenolic character appears. The dense...
